Wall Street Run (3M), 6/24/2010

This evening was the NYRR Wall Street Run. This is the third WSR that I’ve run, and WSR ’08 was my first formal race (and first NYRR race). I set my PR pace at last year’s WSR, but today was really hot (87 deg) and humid (57%) and my training has been pretty weak lately. In the end I took two walking breaks during the race, but still posted a 9:22/mi pace, which isn’t terrible. I’ve gotta get back on a regular training schedule!

Hazy hot and humid for Japan Day 4M, 6/6/2010

It was a pretty gross day yesterday for NYRR’s Japan Day 4-miler. As a nice change, the race started and ended on the 102nd St transverse, rather than down below 72nd, but the route was otherwise the standard 4 mile loop. I probably shouldn’t have passed up all of the water stations, but it ended fine, if a bit slow.

NYRR R Baby Mother’s Day 4M, 5/9/2010

I had a pretty nice run this morning for the R Baby Mother’s Day 4-miler in CP, even though I haven’t run at all since my last race – three weeks ago. I actually got out of the house a bit late, and had a nice warm-up run to get to the starting line (a few minutes after the 8:00 am start) from the 72nd & Bway subway stop. It was a very windy and chilly race, but a nice run, nonetheless.

NYRR Run for the Parks, 4M, 4/18/2010

This morning I ran one of my fastest races ever (my fastest 4M, though I have a faster 5M and 3M). I wasn’t trying to push my pace, but just went out relatively strong and was able to keep it up. I felt good throughout pretty much the whole race. I’m not sure how much I should credit the pre-race warm-up run, which was more than a mile, but that definitely worked out the kinks and is probably something worth trying again.

NYRR Colon Cancer Challenge 4M, 3/28/2010

With temperatures about 25 degrees cooler than last Sunday’s race, this morning’s 4M Colon Cancer Challenge in Central Park felt more like the end of the winter running season than the beginning of spring.  Fortunately, I was not coming off of any illness and started with and maintained a strong pace in the mid-8:00s.  I definitely need to do a lot of hillwork through the summer and before the NYC Marathon (223 days) because the smaller hills that we encountered this morning really took it out of me, similar to how the big hills at the north end of the Park sapped my energy last week.

Sunday Two-Parter: Coogan’s 5K and run back

This morning was NYRR’s Coogan’s Salsa, Blues and Shamrocks 5K in Washington Heights, running up and down Ft. Washington Ave. from 173rd St to Ft. Tryon Park and back. It’s a fun race, with musicians lining the route. It has some solid hills on the route so it can be a challenging 5K. I ran most of the first two miles with Stacey and my friend Ben, who we bumped into in the starting corral.  I also got to see Erica heading into the park as I was coming out and then saw her cross the finish line.

RUN BACK

A group of us arranged to run back from Washington Heights, a route of about 4.5 miles along the Hudson River Greenway. Once we managed to get down from the Heights to the Greenway, we had a nice easy run down. It was a bit windy, but sunny and pretty warm…and mostly empty, which is nice on the more narrow Greenway.

NYRR Gridiron (icicle?) Classic 2010, 2/7/2010

I think today’s was the coldest race I’ve run, and probably one of the coldest runs I’ve gone on altogether. But it turned out to be a great race. I ran a strong, fairly consistent pace, and finished fast, given my current training. Hopefully the cold snap will end soon and I can stop using that as an excuse not to go out in the mornings. I ran the first three miles with a fellow Penn alum that I bumped into, which made most of the race roll by more quickly.

285 days and counting…

Screen shot of my marathon registration confirmation

I’m all signed up and the countdown begins for my first ING NYC Marathon run – November 7, 2010. After some overnight knee pain, I am mostly recovered from yesterday morning’s half-marathon in Central Park. My goal is to draw a line from yesterday to November 7 to put in a strong performance based on a solid training foundation.

Slow and steady finishes the race (without walking!) – Race: NYRR Manhattan Half, 01/24/2010

Today I ran the first of what I hope will be several half-marathon races this year. Given my training of late, which hasn’t really included runs longer than 6mi, my goal was just to finish feeling good. At some point during the race, while I was feeling good, Iupped the ante to make my goal “finish without walking.” Success! I kept a steady, slowish pace throughout the entire race, with its rolling hills, and didn’t have to stop to walk or get water at all (I had my fuel belt and the chill in the air reduced the need for water). I’m hoping this will kick off my training for the NYC Half, coming up on March 21.
